The Ural Transport Engineering Plant Uraltransmash, together with Atom, has developed an incredibly stylish low-floor tram called R1 (short for Russia One). In addition to being the first low-floor tram in Russia, it also looks like an alien from a distant future.

Needless to say, but the designers of the project R1 tried their best. The project developers believe that trams are part of the architectural appearance of the city, so they must bear a special aesthetics and beauty. The main inspiration in creating the look of the new tram was the black Ural gems in a metal frame, hence all these perfectly smooth surfaces and edges, reflecting the city streets and local attractions.

In order to avoid the differences in the final product from the conceptual sketches, the management of Uraltransmash allowed the project designers to work directly with engineers and workers. Due to this, the final appearance of the R1 is practically no different from what was depicted in the form of beautiful renders. You yourself can see in the photos that in reality the tram turned out to be just as impressive as the art sketches. The creators of the tram are particularly proud of this achievement, because the discrepancy between the final product and the concept is only 10%, and this is an incredibly high figure.

One of the main objectives of R1 is to change the attitude of city residents to public transport. On such a tram, everyone will surely want to drive, because R1 was jokingly nicknamed the “iPhone among trams”. High-quality materials, stylish design, comfort and ergonomics in the smallest details - all this makes the R1 a particularly attractive business class tram.

Particularly pleased with the fact that the tram is 79.5% made of components developed and manufactured in Russia. 16% of the components, including materials for the interior of the tram, were imported from Austria, and the remaining 4.5% of special engineering devices were delivered to Russia from Germany. The design, power frame and exterior of the tram were developed from scratch by Russian experts.

Dimensions of the tram R1 - 24 by 2.5 meters. It consists of three sections, each of which is equipped with four reclining-sliding doors. The driver's cabin and cabin are air-conditioned, the tram has a high-quality audio system, satellite navigation, Wi-Fi, even the railings are anti-bacterial in the cabin. In the tram's cabin there are three HD-cameras, four more cameras are placed on the outer surface of the tram. At the same time, the mass-dimensional and dynamic characteristics of the car fully comply with the requirements established in the territory of the Russian Federation.

The driver's cabin is equipped with a windshield with a reverse angle of inclination, which allows to expand the visibility and reduce the number of dead zones, as well as reduce the amount of glare and avoid excessive heating of the cabin with sunlight.

At the moment, a fully working prototype of the R1 tram is presented at the exhibition stand in Yekaterinburg. The first production samples should stand on the rails this fall. It was then that the thorough testing of the tram will begin in combat conditions, after which, in 2015, mass production and supply of trams to the outside of Yekaterinburg should begin. First of all, lucky residents of Omsk, and then the tram R1 will have to appear in Moscow. Uraltransmash promises to conquer the market of trams by 2017, when many of our cities are reconstructing their transport systems by the beginning of the World Cup.

And finally, about the cost of R1. The approximate price tag for the tram will be approximately 1 million euros. By the way, Moscow today buys Pesa's three-section trams at a price of 2 million euros for each, so there is a benefit. Let's hope that very soon we will be able to feel the comfort in the cabin of the advanced tram, as well as to feel the incomparable pride in domestic designers, who, even very rarely, but pleasantly surprise us with their developments.
