Anonymity does not save: AI has learned to recognize people who hide their faces

Scientists continue to actively improve artificial intelligence and teach it new tricks. For example, a team of researchers from the United States and India have developed a neural network that can once and for all deprive any anonymity of participants in all kinds of uprisings, rallies and protests that hide their faces behind scarves, balaclava and other clothing elements. In the future, to escape from justice to a person who violates the law, hoping to remain anonymous, it will be much more difficult.

This system works by recognizing 14 individual points on the face and measuring the distance between them. Based on the obtained measurements, a unique design for each individual is obtained, which makes it possible to recognize it even in the case when it partially hides its face behind spectacles, a beard, a scarf or a mask. To train artificial intelligence scientists used more than 2000 images, which depicted, both individuals and groups of people. At the moment, the system is capable of successfully recognizing people in 56% of cases, but the results of its work are gradually improving as they learn.

Yes, technology is still far from ideal. Nevertheless, the beginning has been made, and already in the coming years, hiding behind the dark glasses or masks will be much more difficult than before. Developed by scientists from Cambridge University and the National Institute of Technology of the city of Varangal, artificial intelligence will be presented to the public at the International Conference on Computer Vision Workshops 2017, which will open its doors at the end of October this year. The results of their work the researchers published on the web and anyone can learn about them.
