Gabe Newell in the next interview made several interesting statements

Waiting for games such as Half-Life 3, Portal 3 and Left 4 Dead 3, has already become a byword. Valve studio founder Gabe Newell has for many years been silent about what is happening within his company, and a huge army of fans of previous games are building various incredible theories and are lost in conjecture. Yesterday, the regular online Reddit session was held, in which Gabe Newell answered numerous questions from fans of his work. And I must say that some of his statements and hints simply can not but rejoice. We selected the most interesting questions from the interview and translated them into Russian specifically for you.

Question: What Valve games are you personally, Gabe, your favorite?

Gabe Newell: It seems to me that Portal 2 is our best single player game. As for the multiplayer, then, from my point of view, this is Dota 2.

Question: Why did you avoid the indication of Half-Life as your favorite game? Do you regret that you once created this universe?

Gabe Newell: The situation with Half-Life is very difficult. You see, I put a lot of effort into this series. Much of the development time depended on me personally. That's why I can not look at my work without criticizing some of my own decisions and their consequences. So it's much easier for me to be a fan of games, in the development of which I took minimal participation. If you are involved in the development of the game, it gradually turns into a set of compromises for you. All that you see in the game is just a small part of what we had to sacrifice as a result. We can say that with Half-Life I have very personal relationships for a number of reasons.

Question: Does Valve plan to continue to produce full-scale single-player games?

Gabe Newell: Yes. We are just working on a few such.

Question: Is it possible that these events of these new games will unfold in the universe of Half-Life or Portal? It seems to us that the stories of these games are still not finished.

Gabe Newell: Yeah.

Question: In the recent past it was reported that the director JJ Abrams was working on the creation of films based on the games Portal and Half-Life. Are the projects still alive or should they already be forgotten?

Gabe Newell: Yes. Jay is still working on them.

Q: Gabe, why does Valve never discuss with his fans the development of new games? Other studios and publishers are eager to tell us about the progress of work on new projects. And you keep a dead silence almost always.

Gabe Newell: This is all because the adoption of some development decisions is given to us much more difficult than other studios. We would not want to waste time and money of our fans in the event, for example, if the project is suddenly canceled in the future or with the passage of time it is transformed into something completely different from what was originally planned. Another important thing is how we discuss project work inside the studio. In fact, we are very sensitive to listening to the game community and the fans of our games. I think that you notice this, especially, looking at how the Steam service is developing. We constantly correct some mistakes, make the system more convenient for gamers, given their numerous comments. But such a system does not work perfectly. After all, we need some time to create new content and fix what's broken. Therefore, it seems to some people that we do not hear them. It's not like that at all. It's just that our response follows a very long delay.

Question: Does Valve plan to develop the Source 2 engine in the coming years?

Gabe Newell: We continue to use Source 2 as our primary development environment. In addition to transferring Dota 2 to this engine, we use it for several projects not yet announced. It is very important for us that inside the studio all games should be developed on one well-known engine. We also try to make Source 2 as friendly and accessible to the developer community outside the walls of our company. Of course, we will provide our engine to everyone who wants it for free.

Question: What do you think, in which direction will Valve company develop in the future?

Gabe Newell: Specifically at the moment, we are concerned with maximizing the number of opportunities for creating all kinds of content. I think that direct investment in iron will provide us with these very opportunities. We are now working on creating a new Knuckle controller for virtual reality, and in parallel we create VR games for it. Also, some Valve employees are actively involved in the development of their own artificial intelligence. We have accumulated a lot of data, and also there are computing powers for their processing. I think that this is an ideal platform for rolling around the machine learning system. Also, I am personally interested in developments in the field of neurocomputer interfaces.

Q: In the Left 4 Dead series, there have been no new games since 2009. Is it possible for this new game to be released in this franchise?

Gabe Newell: Our projects are born at the intersection of technologies, which, we believe, can pull these projects. Also very important are people who are ready and willing to work on the embodiment conceived into reality. We have coped well with entering the market of free games with a variety of user content, releasing Team Fortress. Also in due time it seemed to us, that Left 4 Dead is an excellent opportunity for creation of plots which several players can experience simultaneously.

Question: Maybe you will still reveal the most important secret to us? What is the development status of Half-Life 3 or Half-Life 2 Episode 3? Not so long ago, an anonymous source, who introduced himself as a Valve employee, said that the game was canceled. Can we trust this source?

Gabe Newell: You can not say aloud 3! And yes, personally, I trust all anonymous sources on the Web without exception.

Newell, as usual, provoked the fans with answers, while not revealing any internal secrets of his studio. But one thing became clear for sure: the studio is working on full-fledged games, perhaps even over the continuations of its legendary series. Also we are waiting for new projects for VR and the new Knuckle controller. It is possible that one day we will still see the continuations of Portal, Half-Life and Left 4 Dead. In the meantime, one can only hope for the best, and also believe in the old days of Gabe and his team.
