Access to the Internet has become one of the inalienable human rights

Доступ в Интернет стал одним из неотъемлемых прав человека

We all know about the existence of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations, which absorbed the most important rules of human behavior, developed in the course of the centuries-old history of the existence and development of mankind. The Declaration lists such important rights for any of us as the inviolability of the person, the prohibition of forced labor, freedom of movement, the right to education and many, many others. Now, the right to access the worldwide Internet has also joined this list.

Last Friday, at a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council, a resolution condemning countries blocking their citizens access to the Internet was approved. Digital rights in our time are especially relevant, given how much time many of us spend daily on the Internet through computers or smartphones. On the Internet, human rights must be respected on a par with real life. The adopted resolution is of a recommendatory nature and no countries are obliged to anything. Nevertheless, its adoption can only be the beginning of a new era in the legal sphere.

It is quite expected that the majority of countries voted for the adoption of the resolution, but against such states as China, Saudi Arabia, India, South Africa and Russia. The resolution includes such provisions as freedom of expression on the Internet, the right to protection online, ensuring responsibility for violations of human rights on the Internet, the privacy of Internet users, and the point about the importance of distance education through modern technologies.
