“Drinking book” will help residents of poor countries to clean dirty water

Clean drinking water is still a shortage in many third world countries. Designers and scientists from the universities of Virginia and Carnegie Mellon have teamed up to develop an inexpensive and convenient water purification system, which they called the Drinkable Book or simply the Drinking Book.

The 20 corrugated pages of this book are actually special filters that trap the bacteria of cholera, Escherichia coli and typhoid contained in dirty water. The filters contain tiny silver nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 1 to 100 nanometers in size, which allow you to get rid of 99.9% of dangerous bacteria.

Each filter page can be carefully pulled out of the book, secured in a plastic container, which is originally the packaging of this book, after which water can be filtered through it simply by pouring it on top so that clean water will flow into the lower part of the structure.

In addition to the filtering function, the Drinking Book also has an educational function. Each filter contains a fact or a hint about water, as well as the danger of common bacteria that may be contained in this water. Statistics show that many people in countries with dirty water do not even know what dangers they may face when using unfiltered water.

With a penny cost of production, each filter from the Drinking Book is able to serve up to 30 days, which allows one book to serve as a water filter for more than three years. Agree, a good option for poor countries.
