Apple revelation: iPhone could have been called otherwise

Speaking to students at the University of Arizona's (USA) marketing department, former Apple advertiser Ken Segall revealed some previously unknown details about naming for the iPhone. As it turned out, today's popular smartphone could have been called otherwise.

Initially, Apple considered several variants of the name of the iPhone: "Telepod", "Mobi", "Tripod" and, strange as it may sound, "iPad".

According to Segal, “Telepod” sounds futuristic and is perceived as a synonym for the word “telephone”. In addition, the particle "pod" indicates a connection with the iPod audio player line.

“Mobi” is a shortened version of the word “Mobile”. Apple marketers have concluded the following three words in Tripod: “phone + iPod + Internet”.

Today, “iPad” is associated with a tablet computer. But then, in the “pre-plateau era,” Apple wanted to call it a smartphone. Who knows, maybe someday the apple tablet will get support for calls. After all, there is a lot in common between the iPad and the iPhone.

In the video below you can see another option - "MicroMac". Segal says that he invented this name specifically for the presentation, he just wanted to know the opinion of those present. MicroMac has never been considered a potential name.

At the time of the debut launch of the iPhone, the IPHONE trademark was owned by the American company Cisco. The network equipment developer used this name for their IP phones. Later companies settled relationships in this matter. But with the Brazilian Gradiente this trick did not work.
