The Google Glass app will find your friend in the crowd.

Can't make out the face in the crowd? Do not worry, the system of recognition of people will be able to find you everything you need, even if their faces are not visible. Specially designed for upcoming Google Glas s glasses, the application will be able to identify people by the clothes they wear. The name will be superimposed on top of it.

The group that created the system called InSight is partly funded by Google and recently introduced technology at a conference in Jekyll Island, Georgia. She will help people find their friends in a busy crowd, for example, at a stadium or at an airport. The face recognition system will not be able to work in such conditions, notes InSight developer Srihari Nelakuditi, as hardly anyone in the crowd will look directly into the headset camera.

Nelacuditi joined forces with Romit Roy Choudhury and colleagues from Duke University in Durham to jointly develop a recognition system based on the individual’s “fashion prints”, starting with clothing and ending with bijouterie, bracelets and glasses.

These prints, in turn, will use the smartphone app, which takes a series of photos of the user as he reads the web page or sits on Twitter. After this, a file called “spatiogram” is created, which contains the spatial distribution of colors, textures and patterns (vertical stripes, for example) on the clothes that the person wears. This combination of colors, textures and patterns will simplify the task of identifying an individual from uncomfortable viewing angles or from a distance.

Of course, a natural question arises: where will the prints be stored? In order to preserve privacy, they will change every time you change clothes, so you can always remain anonymous.

“The visual imprint of a person will be temporary, say, for a day or evening,” says Nelacuditi.

The first tests involving 15 volunteers revealed the 93 percent accuracy of a person’s identification, even if he has his back. The motion sensor data in the field of view of Glass glasses will increase accuracy.

“There are lots of personality traits that make us unique,” says Mark Nixon, a biometrics specialist at the University of Southampton in Britain. “Clothes and movements are closely related to the gait — and gait is also an indicator of uniqueness.”

The system will find a lot of applications, starting with those who want to attract attention to themselves at the job fair, and ending with those who resell spare tickets for the stadium.

In addition, it can help people with a disease known as the blindness of individuals - a neurological disorder, because of which people cannot recognize friends by sight.

Of course, the development of such equipment and applications will significantly reduce our chances of being always unnoticed and, when necessary, anonymous. But such a development is successfully predicted even by fashion designers, and we have already written about what kind of disguise you may need in the future in order not to fall into the trap of total surveillance.
