Engineers from the University of Southampton (UK) surprised the world by creating a supercomputer from the designer LEGO and 64 Raspberry Pi - single-board computers, which were combined into a single “organism” capable of solving the most complex tasks.

Creating a supercomputer is not at all difficult, say university representatives. They even released a special guide for those who want to follow their example - the cost of the entire system was estimated at 4,000 dollars, which is not so much for a real computer enthusiast.

The supercomputer was called the “Iridis-Pi”, and its power supply requires only one standard 13-amp socket. Data exchange between the individual nodes is carried out via the Ethernet local area network (MPI data transfer interface - Message Passing Interface). The entered commands promptly perform 64 processors, and the operational efficiency guarantees 1 TB of internal memory (each Raspberry Pi has an SD memory card of 16 GB). The code for combining Raspberry Pi was developed using the free add-on “Python Tools for Visual Studio”; the testing used the programming languages Python and Scratch.

A special pride of the creators of the supercomputer is a unique stand for it, created according to special drawings from the LEGO designer. It’s hardly possible for someone to repeat this, but those who want to have a huge field for imagination, because it’s much more pleasant to work with such an unusual computer created by your own hands (even if the job is to add meta tags or trite reports).
