Mass production of drives with a thickness of 5 millimeters, which WD officially announced about a week ago, will begin in the coming months. At the same time, both conventional HDDs and hybrid hard drives with built-in flash memory will enter the market.

The decision of WD to move the mass production of HDD data from the beginning of 2013 to the end of 2012 was provoked by the display of interest from the leading laptop manufacturers - Acer and ASUSTeK Computer.

Recall the thickness of the current 2.5-inch hard drives for laptops is 9.5 millimeters, and models for ultrabooks can boast a thickness of 7.5 millimeters.

According to the source, the cost of 5-millimeter hard drives will be slightly higher compared to 7.5-millimeter models, which is tied to the development of a new technological process, but still they will be 10 times more affordable than solid-state drives of the same volume.
